Our Gray and Yellow Bedroom

For the past month or so I have been making some changes to our bedroom because we wanted a look that was more cozy and put together.  I wanted to wait to show you guys the changes until I had everything together and could show you the finished look.  These photos go back to what the room looked like when we bought the house in April of 2010.  There was lots of beige and spray-on texture in that room!

Here it is after our first over-haul- we sanded the walls, painted the ceiling and walls, and took out the carpet and had the wood floors refinished (after we took up the sparkly linoleum).

For our new room we wanted something dramatic and relaxing, and we wanted to incorporate the yellow nightstands that we got at an estate sale last year.  First I painted the room a darker gray that would go with the colors in the rest of the house.

Next the dressers each got a new coat of paint, and they also switched places with each other.  The white tall one got a fresh coat of white paint and the light gray one became a darker shade of gray, similar to the wall color.   We also took out the fan that was in the room when we bought it and replaced it with a chandelier.  I spray painted the chandelier a dark gray color to go with the wall color.   So enough about all the steps, here’s the new room!

We still have some things to work on, like art work and accessories, but it’s most of the way there.  I found the yellow pillows on the bed at West Elm this past weekend, and the comforter is from Ikea.

I took some of these photos at night and some in the morning before school so the lighting isn’t the best, but I wanted to go ahead and get everything posted.  We really like the yellow with the dark gray and the new lighting!  Hope you guys like it too!

Our New and Improved Bedroom

The master bedroom is finally back together and looking decent so I thought I would give you guys a quick tour.  Everything is painted (for the most part), the furniture is back in, and the closet curtains are up.

Before we look at the new photos, I’ll do a quick recap of where this room started out.

Here it is when we moved in.

Here it is today.

I used the same Ritva curtains for the closet doors that I used earlier in the office, and they are so much easier to open and close.

We also have a lot more closet space compared to the room we were in before so both Jimmee and I can hang things in the closet.   It’s a little messy in this photo, but you can get the idea.

The other nice part is that we have built-ins in the closet for Jimmee’s clothes and my shoes!

Eventually, I’m going to paint the gray chest of drawers and put photos into those frames, but I’m still deciding what photographs to use and what color to paint….

My mom planted a bush of these Drift Roses when she was in town, and they are blooming like crazy.  I keep going out and picking them for each room of the house because they’re so cute, and they smell so good.

Now I’m off to look for those photographs and hang a couple more pictures around the house.  Hope you all have a great day!

Bye-Bye Sparkle Linoleum

Alright guys, remember the sparkle linoleum from yesterday…

Well, after some intense sanding by Andy’s Custom Flooring and some shiny top coats we have a beautiful, glossy wood floor.  I thought that the guys would scrape off the linoleum before sanding, but instead they just ground the stuff down until they got to the wood.  I thought this was a smart strategy, and for anyone who is interested they used a 15 grit sandpaper on the linoleum.

Here is the gorgeous new floor.

Today I finally was able to walk on the floor, and I have been busily working on the next steps in the room- priming, sanding woodwork, painting ceilings, walls, trim, closets.  I finished most of the painting and I’m so excited to move the bed in tomorrow.

I did manage to drag my dresser into the room using some old towels, but I’ll have to wait until Jimmee gets back to move the rest.

It’s pretty amazing what a sander can do!   Hope you all are having a great Wednesday.

The Start of a New Room

Today got off to a rough and very hot start when our air conditioner broke, but things are back on track and the cool air is blowing again, thankfully!   Last week I started working on the room that eventually will be our master bedroom, and it should be done later this week.  In the meantime I’ll update you on what I’ve been working on…

The bedroom had the same popcorn texture as the other rooms, and of course it was on the walls, ceilings, outlets, and baseboards.  I decided before I took the carpet out I needed to get rid of the bumpy walls.  That’s where the photo above comes in… because that’s what it was like when I was sanding.   Things were very dusty, and I looked like a ghost.

After I checked the sanding off the list, it was time to get rid of the carpet.  I knew there were wood floors somewhere underneath, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I would find.

I was not really expecting 1970s linoleum with sparkle in it!!!

Here’s the whole room.

At this point, I was feeling a little overwhelmed and horrified by all the linoleum that would need to be scraped up.  We had experience in the living room with scraping linoleum glue off of a wood floor, and it was not fun or easy.  Here was my small attempt.  This took forever, and I was ready to hand it over to the professionals.

I called around to a couple of places, and I found a company who could sand it and have it finished in a couple of days.  Tomorrow I’ll post the results of the professionals work.  You’ll be amazed at what a little sanding can do, well maybe a lot of sanding.

Polishing up the Bedroom

I finished the master bedroom recently, well actually awhile ago, but I’m finally getting around to posting the photos.  I didn’t really have much to do in this room since the wood floors were already refinished, but there was an outdated maroon floral border and some forest green curtains that didn’t quite work for me.  When I took these curtains down, the room suddenly brightened up and the light came through.

Here is the only before picture I took.

Well, actually I guess there were two.

I took down the border, which was surprisingly hard because little bits of the paper were stuck to the wall.  After getting it all down with some hot water spray, I painted the room a similar neutral color just so it was fresh.  I tried to wait until the sun came out for the pictures, but it seems the weather is not going to cooperate.  We have had non-stop rain for the last couple of days, including a couple tornadoes and golf-ball sized hail, so the photos aren’t as bright as I had hoped.

The curtains helped to lighten things up, and I really like this bedspread – it has such cute buttons and a beautiful flower print.

And the rest of the room…

That’s as far as we’ve gotten with the room, but I have some plans for the closet and for the furniture in the room.  Eventually the two nightstands from the garage sale will be in here, and I would also like to get some pictures up on the walls.  I’m hoping to put this one up behind the bed…. (got the picture from easyart.com)

Hopefully we’ll get down to the decorating details sometime in the near future, but until then it’s on to the living room floor!  I took my last final today so I’m free to work on whatever I want now, and floor refinishing is first on the list.
